Bank of America Corporation (BoA) is one of the largest and most influential financial institutions in the United States and globally. Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, the bank manages over $2.6 trillion in total assets (2025), making it the second-largest U.S. bank by assets, right behind JPMorgan Chase.
The bank has a long history, tracing back to 1904, when Amadeo Giannini founded the “Bank of Italy” in San Francisco to serve immigrants who lacked access to traditional financial institutions. It later became the Bank of America, eventually merging with NationsBank in 1998, which officially created the modern-day Bank of America we know today.
BoA operates in more than 35 countries and serves 68 million consumer and small-business clients across the United States. The bank offers a full range of financial services, including consumer banking, commercial banking, corporate and investment banking, and wealth management.
Its four major divisions are:
Consumer Banking – Checking, savings, mortgages, credit cards, and auto loans.
Global Wealth & Investment Management (GWIM) – Wealth management via Merrill (formerly Merrill Lynch) and the Private Bank.
Global Banking – Lending, treasury services, and investment banking for corporations and institutions.
Global Markets – Sales and trading of fixed income, currencies, commodities, and equities.
Nationwide Reach: Over 3,800 branches and 15,000 ATMs across the U.S.
Digital Innovation: Nearly 42 million active digital banking users, with Erica®, its AI-powered virtual assistant, leading the industry in mobile banking tools.
Credit Cards: Known for its rewards cards such as Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards and Travel Rewards cards.
Merrill: A strong presence in wealth management, consistently ranking among the top U.S. investment advisors.
Global Leadership: A major player in corporate finance, underwriting, and securities trading.
BoA has survived multiple crises, including the 2008 financial crisis, where it acquired Merrill Lynch and Countrywide Financial. Although the acquisitions were controversial due to inherited mortgage risks, they cemented BoA as a financial powerhouse with one of the largest wealth management businesses in the world.
Today, the bank emphasizes sustainability, diversity, and digital transformation. It has pledged billions toward green financing and community development, particularly in affordable housing and small business support.
