Citibank Australia was the Australian consumer banking arm of Citigroup, a leading global financial services company headquartered in New York, USA. Citibank was the first foreign bank to be granted a banking license in Australia in 1985, and for decades it operated as a niche player in the Australian market, especially in credit cards, wealth management, and premium banking services.
In 2022, National Australia Bank (NAB) acquired Citigroup’s Australian consumer banking operations, meaning that Citibank-branded accounts and credit cards are now serviced under NAB. However, many customers still recognize and use Citibank-branded credit cards, wealth accounts, and global banking services through Citi’s institutional arm.
Today, Citigroup continues to operate in Australia mainly as Citi Australia (Institutional Banking), offering corporate and investment banking services, while NAB manages the retail/consumer business that was previously Citibank.
