Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido) is one of the seven regional companies of the Japan Railways Group (JR Group), established in 1987 following the privatization of Japanese National Railways (JNR). It primarily serves Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, operating intercity, commuter, and limited express trains. JR Hokkaido also manages the Hokkaido Shinkansen line connecting the island to Honshu via the Seikan Tunnel.
Hokkaido’s Primary Rail Operator – Provides most rail services across the island.
Hokkaido Shinkansen – Operates the high-speed line linking Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Honshu.
Tourism-Oriented Services – Offers sightseeing trains showcasing Hokkaido’s landscapes.
Regional Connectivity – Essential transport for residents in rural and snowy regions.
Seasonal Adaptation – Trains adapted for heavy snow and harsh winter conditions.
JR Hokkaido Passes – Special tourist passes for domestic and international visitors.
Smaller Scale – Compared to other JR companies, JR Hokkaido serves fewer passengers but covers vast distances.
